Toony head again + steps

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Hey guys! I’ve been experimenting with more cartoony stuff both at work and at home lately, and at the bus to and from work. I sat down today to sketch and have fun, and I scanned one dude and slapped some color on there. It’s not much, but I wanted to keep things going on the blog as well and I had fun painting the dude :) I know the profile isn’t the best of things to render out, I prefer a 3/4 view, but sketching profiles for like base designs works really well, because you can really produce a lot of sketches in a short amount of time, so there ya have it.. hehe.. Actually got some steps saved for this one, so I figured I could put them on here as well.

First step; sketch and scan.

Second step; I used a multiply layer to drop in the base colors. I basically just throw them down with a big round brush with opacity to pressure to get some control.

Next I go into my usual flurry of layers, getting into more defining of the light direction and forms. I really have horrible control of my layers, but it’s mainly normal layers and every time I want to try something I’m not sure about, I add a new one as fast and big undo. I’ve set up my Photoshop preferences with 10 undos, so it won’t slow down my system with lots of undos stored in the memory, and the extra layes adds some extra safety nets. I also use overlay layers a bit to push colors a bit more.. Overlay works really well for adjusting existing colors seeing as how it gives you a layer that adjusts hue, saturation and value all in one :)

And skip to the final render where I’ve done more of the stuff from the previous step:

Now this can by no means be called a tutorial or any such thing, but maybe someone can pick up something from it :)

Thanks for looking guys!

Pirate character concept

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

I know, I know… I’m more on the ninja side of things, but sometimes you gotta draw a pirate. This was a really quick warmup today at work. It’s done in about the same style we’re working on for our game ;)

Not my usual style, but it’s fun to do some more cartoony stuff as well! I’ll color and render him up properly later.

Environment speedpaint and studies

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Hey guys!

Had some time today for a little speedpaint in addition to my studies! Woohoo! The concept of a hidden city in the jungle is a very cool one, and I don’t think I’ve explored it before, so I did today. I kinda like this 30 minute sketch, so I think I’ll refine it and do a finished piece of it. (Click for larger version)

I have been thinking about adding another sub page to the site for a while where I would do a more in depth look at individual projects and pieces. I would very much like your thoughts on this. If you’d find it interesting or rubbish and if it’d be nice to see some steps, thoughts and background on what I do both with professional work and personal art? I’d arrange it so there would be some more meat to each post so to speak. Say if there’s a particular world I’m developing, you’d get to know a bit more than just the final pieces.

Do leave a comment on here about that! Very interested in hearing you guys’ thoughts!

Right.. and the studies :)

Speedy

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Just a speedy from tonight. Saira and I were sitting in front of the tube and I just splattered some color around and saw what came of it. Been a while since I’ve done that, and it was really fun to just eff’ around a little! I should do it more often.. haha

Freelance concept artist

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Hey guys! Long time no blog.. Had a lot going on lately. After thinking about it for quite some time, I’ve finally reached the decision to quit my current job. From January 2010 I’ll be a freelancer, so wish me luck and let me know if you have any work for me! Hehe.. I really needed a change, and I’m stoked about what the new year will bring! For all you guys out there working creative jobs (or otherwise for that matter) that feel you need a change; DO IT! It’s good to feel you’re taking a new step, turning over a new page and all that!

I’m starting to form a couple of plans on what to do next year, and there will be concept art comin’ out of it! :D (It’s all I know how to do, and all I want to do, so there ya go..hehe).. I’ll fill you in when stuff starts moving properly!

Little bit of art to go with the post.. I’ve recently rediscovered ink and markers for sketching, and I’m having a blast with it, so I figured I could show you a couple of doodles at least ;) I’m cookin’ up some digital paint stuff too, so I’ll post as soon as I have anything worth showing! For now; some steampunk-y markers..

HULK CHIMP SMASH!!!

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

With my sincerest apologies to Marvel and bananas, I give you HULK CHIMP!!

No concept art as such, I guess more twisted fan art? I don’t know.. it’s just a blog though, right? I’m allowed to go off on a tangent right? Haha
Had a lot of fun with this one! :D The concept of an unholy alliance of the hulk and a chimp amused me to no end! Haha! Hope you guys dig it! (Oh.. and I think he’s pissed ‘cuz he can’t for the life of him peel a banana without it popping out)

Movie studies

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Hey guys! Did a few studies from movie stills this weekend.. Watched some movies and hit pause when I saw something I liked and painted after it.. Trying to get a new angle on colors, composition and light.. also studies like these are really good for focusing my thinking on what I’m gonna study and not get caught up in doing my own designs.

People who know me know that I really digs me some Craig Mullins’ work and his handle on implied detail and such, so I’ve been trying to get outta rendering every bit and stay loose. No intentions of trying to end up a Mullins clone, but his approach to an image is awesome so I’m trying to learn a little bit from him.. haha..

These studies are all pretty fast though.. also in order for me not to noodle and nitpick my ass off..

’nuff talkin’; more pictures!

This last one “From Hell” is my definate favourite of the bunch.. I feel I found something there.. thinking about implied detail on this one.. and staying loose with the brush strokes.I used a brush I don’t usually touch as well, which seems to have loosened up my stuff. It’s basically shaped like a “/” with tilt sensitivity on and opacity to pressure.
